In the broadest sense, my work revolves around the mind and the body. I was initially drawn to making work like chairs, tables and other functional objects because of the role they play in our life. Functional work has an immediate purpose and a direct relationship to human scale, often times we associate the functional with menial and everyday objects. My goal was to change that perception and turn the mundane into the extraordinary to create a commentary on our built environment and our bodies within them. Through the physical act of making, I was able to have a deeper insight into material, form, and function and create objects with strong intention.

My goal when designing and creating the birds nest chair was to step beyond what we usually think of as a classic piece of furniture. I also wanted to create a piece of work that was very much a narrative about material. Through collaboration with my peer Xochi Maberry-Gaulke in woodworking studio we were able to design a chair that complimented both materials wood and metal. We were able to balance out the free form, and abstract nature of metal with the simple elegance that comes with well formed, polished wood. The forms of each element within the chair were influenced for the others.  As a result we were able to create a piece of work that was both functional and inspiring to the user.
